The Estrella site is the tallest communications facility in central Arizona. Located eleven miles west of South Mountain, this fully self-sustained, off-grid power system has been in service for more than 40 years.
The security system includes a central-station-monitored alarm, multi-camera surveillance, and power and environmental monitoring.
The Estrella communications site is only accessible by helicopter.
Features include an emergency generator, UHF master receive system, and three towers: a 20′ self-supporting, 40′ guyed, and 80′ self-supporting. The site also has two shelters, one a cinder block and a steel shelter which houses a 48 VDC battery power plant, 12 VDC battery power plant, redundant 120 VAC inverters and 8′ tall x 19″ wide equipment racks. In 2019 the site underwent a solar power upgrade.
